CHAPTER SIX

the mystery of the murdered couple deepens and The romano’s fight to own chicago

Lewis laid the contents of the box on the counter, and they all just sat there staring at it. This was evidence and should be in police custody, yet it was returned to them by none other than the good ole police chief himself.

“Well, what in the hell are we going to do with a woman's purse and a man’s wallet? We’ve already sealed the god-damned wall up.” Marti was frustrated as hell at this point.

“We’re just going to unseal the damn thing and bury those two with their personal belongings and identity. Besides, we didn’t really seal the damn thing up, we just put a fail-safe lock that only Cliff and I know how to get back in there.” Lewis smirked.

Cliff offered his two cents worth and said, “Look, those bodies are evidence of a murder, and the purse and wallet are proof of who these folks were. But it is highly unlikely the murderer left evidence about who he is, we have to use the money and jewelry as a ploy to lure him out.”

“Folks, this is a murder over twenty to thirty years ago. The killer may not even be alive today. I suggest the money and jewelry be locked in the vault back at the agency, and we make sure these two are still buried in the wall with their identification. Let them rest in peace, and if someone comes after their loot, we’ll catch them then.” Skye would not have normally suggested a thing such as that, but she went on to say, “Keeping all that loot in the wall was crazy and buried with those folks, they paid with their lives when they stole it in the first place. There would be no way in hell of tracing the loot to its rightful owner or owners at this point.”

That was when Cliff and Lewis turned the light fixture next to the display, and the damn thing opened up like a crypt door, and there were those two bodies still embraced and as creepy as ever.

This was the most unpleasant thing they had ever done, but Lewis slipped the woman's purse right back where it had been found and the wallet at the man's feet.

Cliff was taller, so he reached up and grabbed all the bags of jewelry and bags of money and tossed them to Skye. She nearly fainted, just touching those old bags that had once been held by the couple now dead and buried in the wall.

He then took a duster and spread the cobwebs and dust, so it looked as if all those bags of loot were never there.

“Do you think the chief would agree about us doing this? He didn’t tell us to remove the loot, just to keep the handbag and wallet safe.” Marti said.

“But we are keeping them safe, in our safe,” Lewis answered sarcastically, then gave his wife a sweet smile. He was forgiven already for bad-mouthing her.
